If you read my “NYC’s Best Beauty Spots” I probably (hopefully) left you a little bit intrigued about my experience at Higher Dose. I shared my experience there on Snapchat and probably got 15 people snap me back and they were all like “where on earth are you and what are you doing?” I was detoxifying, that’s where.
I reached out to Higher Dose to see if they wanted to be included in my post, so I obviously had to try it out. For research, duh. I didn’t really understand the idea behind it, but I knew that I wanted to try it out. They are new to the area and it doesn’t take Bill Nye to guess that they’re going to be a new fitness fad. Higher Dose on the LES offers infrared sauna sessions. You can go by yourself, or bring a friend (which costs extra). For 30 minutes it’s $45 and for an hour it’s $65 for just you. It’s semi-pricey, but my gosh is it worth it.
What’s Infrared? Infrared saunas use heaters that give off the same rays that the sun does (no UV rays here!)instead of only coals. Meaning… your body heats up faster and you release more sweat. Infrared saunas also detoxify 7x more than a regular saunas.
The experience: Below the Grown Alchemist, the stairwell down is covered in vines and wood pallets, so you’re already feeling totes zen. The floor plan is open with salt lamps in almost every corner, and private rooms for the sauna. Your sauna is in your own personal room. In here, you get undressed, can take a break from your sweat-sesh, and fill up on water. I loved the idea of just having the entire room to yourself. The sauna is just big enough to put your feet up, but not big enough to lie down if you’re by yourself. In the sauna, you’re provided with an AUX cord to play whatever your heart desires while inside, along with a remote control to change the lighting of the infrared light. Here’s what each color means:
Red: Increase energy, activates collagen cells, stimulates skin to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and energizes organs.
Yellow: Promotes positivity, happiness, humor, optimism, and joy.
Blue: Eases anxiety depression. Promotes calmness.
Orange: Stimulates creative thinking and enthusiasm. Helps to remove inhibitions paving independent social behavior.
Green: Promotes creativity, self-happiness, self-love.
Violet: Provides wisdom and inner strength, and enhances artistic talent and creativity.
Within minutes, I was drenched in sweat. I had to take a few breaks and step out because I couldn’t believe how much I was sweating. I probably drank 10 glasses of water just in the hour. I should have brought a book just to keep my mind off of the sweating. I’m not the kind of person who can immediately just let me mind go quiet, it takes me a while. Towards the last 20 minutes of my session, I started to feel really relaxed and almost euphoric. Once it was done, I wiped off, and got dressed… I felt so good. The only way I know how to describe it into words is just: light. I felt much lighter. I felt cleansed, I felt detoxified, my skin felt like butter. I felt happier for no apparent reason, and that night I slept like a baby. I woke up the next day feeling refreshed, and not groggy at all, which is routine for me. Needless to say, I’ll be fitting Higher Dose into my schedule at least once a month.
